Do you remember the first time you brought your new computer home and hooked it up? It was probably running faster than you ever imagined and were probably thinking that you were going to stay on top of this machine with anti-virus, anti-spyware and adware programs. Sadly even if you are meticulous and stay on top of these things every day you are going to see your system gradually slow down and become cluttered with old data. This is where registry cleaners come into play. While they are not the end answer in getting your computer optimized it can be a huge step in the right direction to getting that new computer smell back to the way it was when you brought it home.
The registry is where everything you install on your computer gets stored. However, while most things install properly, most of the time when you are uninstalling programs and hardware they do not get completely removed. This leads to a clutter of bits and pieces of old registry keys that can slow down the performance of your computer drastically. Even though this is almost a certainty there are ways of getting around this and helping your computer run as well as it should.
Turning off all the programs you have running in the background will be a great way to start this process. Most of the time there are things running and you can usually see them in your task bar that is located in the lower right hand corner of the screen. If you have file sharing or IM programs running for example they can wreak havoc when running or starting your computer. Most of them do not need to be constantly running and this can be managed by startup management programs. Learning more about this is as easy as searching Google and doing a little reading.
Running the disk defragmenter and the disk cleanup is another great way to optimize performance. These are free tools that come with any Windows computer and can be found in the start menu tab under programs/accessories/system tools. Using free spyware and adware programs is an essential step in keeping your computer clean. There are limitless available programs that are free-ware such as Spybot S+D and AdAware that are highly recommended and can do wonders in getting rid of the things an anti-virus program won't find.
