Life On Earth
Smell-Sending Smartphone App
Smartphone technology has mastered transmitting information through sight, sound and touch. That, however, just wasn't enough for Japanese cosmetics manufacturer Chaku Ltd, so they came up with a little something that lets smartphones send and receive smells.
Chat Perf is a very simple peripheral that's plugged into the iPhone's USB port to take care of the physical part of the problem, while the accompanying app does the rest. The fact that a cosmetics company managed to pull off something like this without requiring the phone to be tampered with is pretty impressive on its own.
The idea was conceived during a conversation between staff about smartphone technology and what it lacks. One of the female employees said you can't smell through a phone and so here we are.
Chaku Ltd. are looking at exporting this technology and it has every chance to pick up in the West. If enough people got into it, they'd eventually want to share their smells somewhere public. Smell-based social networks anyone?
